  First of all, by default, Spanning Tree is enabled on the Catalyst 5000
  interface. Spanning Tree causes the switch to go through a series of
  states (listening, learning, blocking, or forwarding), based on the
  network status.
  
  The Spanning Tree algorithm has a default configuration of 15 seconds for the forward delay. The forward delay determines how long the
  Switch stays in each state before moving to the next state. The Switch port remains 'off-line' for up to 45 seconds before entering the
  forwarding mode. This is important because Xterminals and IPX workstations require data forwarding on initial connection.
  You must execute the 'set portfast' command to set the Catalyst 5000
  port to 'fast forwarding' mode before you can connect your Xterminal.
  The 'set portfast' command allows the Catalyst port to forward the
  initial traffic, while going through the Spanning Tree algorithm in
  the background.
  Note: You should only use Spanning-tree PortFast when connecting
  a single end station to a switch port; otherwise, you might
  create a network loop.
  Perform the following steps (in 'privileged' mode) to enable PortFast
  mode:
  1. Enable PortFast on the Switch port that is connected to a
  single workstation or server:
  set spantree portfast mod_num/port_num {enable | disable}
  2. Verify the PortFast setting:
  show spantree [mod_num/port_num]
  You should see something similar to the following output:
   Console> (enable) set spantree portfast 1/2 enable
  Warning: Spantree port fast start should only be enabled on ports
