Workstations will be allocated to the first interactive subsystem that attempts to allocate it. Allocation is automatically attempted by active subsystems if the subsystem has a workstation name or type entry that would include its name or type and for which the allocation parameter is set to *SIGNON. For example, a workstation type entry of *ALL that has its allocation parameter set to *SIGNON will be able to allocate all workstations unless it is restricted from doing so by virtue of a workstation exclusionary entry. For another example, a workstation name entry of QPADEV* that has its allocation parameter set to *SIGNON will similarly be able to allocate all workstations having a name which starts with the characters QPADEV unless it has a workstation exclusionary entry exempting either a specific workstation name or a smaller range of workstation names. An example of that might be an exclusionary name entry of QPADEV1* or QPADEV0010. The exclusionary entry has an allocation parameter set to *ENTER.
If a subsystem does not have workstation type entries with allocation parameter set to *SIGNON or any generic workstation name entries (one ending in an *) that would match the first part of the name for a particular workstation then there is no need to use exclusionary entries to prevent that subsystem from allocating specific workstations. Thus, if a subsystem only has workstation name entries with specific names with their allocation parameters set to *SIGNON then there would be no reason to give it any exclusionary workstation name/type entries. If you did have a subsystem with either a *ALL type entry with allocation set to *SIGNON or a generic name entry with allocation set to *SIGNON which would permit allocation of a specific or generic set of workstation names, and you needed to prevent allocation of a specific workstation or smaller subset of name workstation names, then you would need to add an exclusionary entry to that subsystem to prevent the allocation.
For example, suppose you have three interactive subsystems of QINTER, QINTER2, and QINTER3 for which QINTER has an *ALL type entry with allocation set to *SIGNON, but QINTER2 and QINTER3 have only name entries with allocation set to *SIGNON and you want to add a new workstation WS123XA to be allocated exclusively to QINTER2. You would need to add the following two workstation name entries to: 1) enable the workstation to be allocated to QINTER2, and 2) to be excluded from allocation by QINTER.
